Håvard Breivik participated in the panel 'Crises Planning in the Humanitarian World' with Malkit Shoshan from FAST, Robert Schupp from PACE Global Strategies and Michael J Colber, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection & APA International Division at the American Planning Association 2019 National Planning Conference n San Francisco.
Text from the organzier: Whether trying to meet the immediate needs of communities or making plans for their long-term future, planners can have crucal roles in serving the people in emergency and conflict areas. From guiding decisions about land use and infrastructure to facilitating community participation in local decisionmaking to developing plans for long-term reconstruction and recovery, planners have a unique skill set to assist communities going through crises. At the same time, planners are rarely sought for jobs with relief organizations — even the title "site planner" is usually reserved for architects or engineers. Panelists address some of the unique challenges of doing planning work in emergency and conflict settings. Hear a discussion of the typical silos that exist in the humanitarian world, looking at how planners may fit into different programs and situations. Finally, examine ideas for how APA might play a role in this issue.
