Background

A 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti on 12 January 2010, affecting 3 million people. Widespread destruction in the captial Port-au-Prince and other cities left over 1.5 million people homeless, many of whom resettled in spontaneous settlement sites across the earthquake-affected area.

Mission

Emergency response and early recovery: deployed by the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) / NORCAP. Planned and implemented safe new Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps, conducted land suitability and physical hazard assessments, undertook mitigation works in spontaneous makeshift camps, initiated and implemented rubble removal and neighborhood reconstruction projects, focused on common and public spaces.
