Background

On 25 April 2015, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal, causing widespread destruction. The first earthquake was followed by thousands of aftershocks and another powerful quake on 12 May, measuring 7.3. The two earthquakes caused mass displacement. Mission

Emergency response: deployed by the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) / NORCAP to conduct assessments to identify risk posed by both environmental hazard and social challenges in spontaneous self-settled camps for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). Made recommendations of required engineering measures; developed design solutions required to improve site conditions. Coordinated with local authorities and other partners to link engineering assessments with partner organizations to undertake mitigation works. Initiated and coordinated activities as implementing organization in spontaneous displacement sites.
